Does Mindfulness Really Alter Your Brain?

Mindfulness 2

Have you ever felt as if the Universe is speaking to you? Well in fact maybe, just maybe it isn’t the universe it is someone else much bigger than that.

While looking at a few things on Amazon a previously saved book in my cart caught my attention. I decided to order it and with a quick click of the mouse the audio book Switch On Your Brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf was on its way to my house.

Let me just say first of all thank goodness I ordered the audio book because this is proving to be a challenging one to follow since it is very scientific and theoretical in nature, yet I couldn’t turn it off. Something about it is intriguing.

The overall concept is we have control over our minds and how we react and take things in can make huge impacts on our brain. She even goes as far as saying the cancer gene switches on or off depending on these thoughts. Dr. Leaf then ties this all to scriptures in the bible and how God talks of renewing our minds.

I am still listening currently and just began the 21 Days to Detox Your Brain section of the book so we shall see how it all turns out.

What was interesting each day as I listened for 15-30 minutes here or there was how other books and blogs I was reading highlighted similar thinking. Or maybe I was just being mindful of my thinking since this is of course what Dr. Leaf was teaching me to do in her book.

Here are just a few quotes from a few if you are interested.

The Seeds 4 Life Blog

“Do you have a clear picture of the person you want to be?  Do your current thoughts, actions, and goals line up with that description?”

“This is not about pretending to be somebody you’re not, it’s about realizing that within you, you have the influence to be whoever you WANT to be.  It’s understanding that you hold the power of choice, and the ability to change your habits and your thinking starting right now if you wished.”

Jeff Goins, Guest Blog Writer on Michael Hyatt’s Blog

Master your mindset. What you think about, you become. And if you are still caught up believing that some people are “just born with it,” that’s going to create a limitation on what you think is possible.”

Who Says It’s a Mans World by Emily Bennington

Being mindful simply means paying complete attention in the present moment, a skill that is dying on the vine faster than a typewriter.”

“If you want to change your results, change the story you’re telling yourself. Positive perception = positive behaviors. Negative perception = negative behaviors.”

Caroline Leaf, Switch On Your Brain.

There are just too many good quotes to pull out one so here are a few I obtained from Goodreads.

“Reaction is the key word here. You cannot control the events or circumstances of your life, but you can control your reactions.”

“Your body is not in control of your mind—your mind is in control of your body, and your mind is stronger than your body. Mind certainly is over matter.”

“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.”

“The process of thinking and choosing is the most powerful thing in the universe after God, and it is a phenomenal gift from God to be treasured and used properly.”

Do you believe that you have control over your mind? Do you think your thoughts can have a much bigger impact on health and outcome than you ever could have imagined? Is someone much bigger than this Universe speaking to you?

I believe that God guides my mind and lights my path, what about you?
